FAQ

We love helping our clients better understand all their treatment options so they can make the best possible decision regarding their requirements.

Below are some of the answers to our most frequently asked questions about aesthetic injectable treatments like Botox, Juvederm, Emerval, Restylane, and Belotero. We hope you find them to be of value.

Botox® Cosmetic is a brand of product that works beneath the skin’s surface and targets the underlying muscle activity that causes wrinkles, frown lines and crow’s feet to form.

Botox® Cosmetic is injected into the facial muscles that are responsible for wrinkles and fine lines and relaxes those muscles. The ingredients in Botox block the signal from the nerve to the muscle, and thereby reduce its ability to contract and form wrinkles.

Botox® Cosmetic was approved by Health Canada in 2001 and has been used in millions of treatments, making it the most popular medical aesthetic service in the world.

Our physician specialists are very careful in the application of Botox® Cosmetic to ensure a naturally rejuvenated result, and not a frozen look which can result from treatment in the wrong hands.

Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport® are both brands in the “wrinkle relaxer” category of products.   They work beneath the skin’s surface and targets the underlying muscle activity that causes wrinkles, frown lines and crow’s feet to form.

Our physician specialists are experienced with both products and select between them or use them in different areas of the face for optimal result.

There is a category of products known as wrinkle relaxers and two of the leading brands in this category are Botox® and Dysport®. These products have been used in millions of treatments and form the most popular medical aesthetic service in the world.

Over time, the muscles above and between your eyebrows repeatedly contract, causing wrinkles to form. Wrinkle relaxers are generally injected around these muscles. They relax the muscle for a period of four to six months so that the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles is reduced, creating a refreshed or relaxed appearance.

Dermal fillers replace volume and structure lost through the aging process. The leading brands in this category include Juvederm®, Emerval®, Restylane®, Belotero®, and Radiesse®. Dermal fillers are generally used to replace volume in lips and reduce the appearance of deep folds and lost volume in the face.

Wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers are often used in combination in different areas for an optimal result.   Our physician specialists are very careful in the application of these products to avoid a frozen look or an overly treated look which can be the result of their use in the wrong hands.

Our physicians are not only specialists, they are trainers of other physicians in Montreal and around the world.

We believe their extensive medical and aesthetic training on the skin and the structure of the face can ensure the most natural looking and best possible rejuvenating result.

A treatment can take about 10 to 30 minutes depending on the type of treatment and area treated. An important part of a first treatment is the consultation with our physician specialist.

A consultation with one of our highly trained laser technicians for any laser treatment is free. They do not perform consultations for aesthetic injectable treatments. A consultation with a Victoria Park Medispa physician can range between $125 and $200, depending on the type of consult. A consultation for an injectable treatment with a nurse injector is free, however, if a prescription is written by a physician to proceed with a treatment, a $55 charge will apply.

Treatment with wrinkle relaxers like Botox® and Dysport® generally take a few days after treatment with full results showing within two weeks. Treatment with dermal fillers for volume can be noticed immediately

At Victoria Park Medispa, our goal is to ensure our clients always look naturally rejuvenated. Friends should not be able to tell that you had a treatment, just that you look fresher and more relaxed. You can review our before and after photos in person before any treatment to understand the improvements from any treatment.

Treatment with wrinkle relaxers generally last about four to six months. Treatments with dermal fillers generally last nine to fifteen months.

The use of dermal filler to replace lost volume or lack of volume in the lips is generally referred to as a lip augmentation.

A proper treatment is not simply about adding volume to the lip, but ensuring proportionality between the lips and the face to ensure a natural look.

Botox® has been proven to also be an effective treatment for hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating in hands, feet and underarms. When Botox® is placed near the sweat glands, the signals to sweat are stopped. Treatments last an average of 6-7 months with a third of patients going one year between treatments. As well, many private drug plans will cover the medication portion of the treatment.

Age is not a factor as to what a person should get done. The factors we take into consideration are skin quality, desires and budget. We cannot recommend a pre-treatment consultation enough so one of our specialists can examine your skin first and steer you in the right direction based on your desired outcomes.
A good sign that injectables are right for you is when you begin to see permanent lines when the face is not animated. You want to start the neuromodulators before lines become too deep, but you don’t want to get anything done if the lines disappear when the face is rested.
We always recommend coming in for a consultation first so that we can see what is causing the problem and what dosage is needed for you. The necessary dosage is individually-based and will differ from person to person.
For the crow’s feet and forehead lines, we usually go for a lighter dose of botulinum toxin, as we only want to relax the area and not numb it. This is a great procedure to get done around the Spring and Summer time, since this is a period where we tend to squint more. Some patients also find this helps them feel better since it relaxes their face and relieves them from tension on the forehead that can cause headaches.
The word “toxin” is used in botulinum toxin because it paralyses the muscle, but it has very little side effects. Also, the injectable is only added to the specific muscle we want to target and it’s very important to always inject the right amount to avoid the frozen look.
Allergic reactions are very uncommon, about one in a million, and usually are caused by a sensitivity to the preservatives. At Victoria Park, the wellbeing of our patients is extremely important and we continually educate our team to stay ahead of the curve for the sake of our patients.
People are often worried about injecting too much! Keep in mind that one syringe is equal to one teaspoon of product only.
When it comes to the expertise of your injector, they should be able to guide you on how much to get. This is very different for each individual and should be discussed first with a professional. If an expert knows what they’re doing and is doing it well, no one will know but everyone will notice! An unnatural result is never something a Dr. wants for their patient.
An expert will look at your face holistically and guide you through the procedures that will bring balance to your face. What we consider to be beautiful can differ for each and every one of us but always has two things in common: symmetry and specific proportions.
A professional will be able to tell you what specific things to do to make a face more feminine or more masculine, by playing with these proportions. They will be able to tailor a plan for your specific needs while taking your budget into consideration.
Having someone come to us, trusting us after a bad experience is a true privilege. We recommend the patient bring a full medical history, the brand of the injectable used and how much was used if possible. With this information, an expert will be able to assess the situation and guide you through the next steps.
If you are not happy with the results of a lip augmentation, the good news is that hyaluronic acid fillers are completely reversible. If the patient does not want to wait for the HA to disappear naturally, we can use a composite called hyaluronidase to completely break down the HA, which will turn into water and be absorbed by the body.
Injectables are an ongoing process, you should be coming in every few months to maintain them. Our professionals will be able to tell you what you need, according to your budget, which is why we offer a free follow-up session, two weeks after an injection procedure.
If you’ve never had it done, we recommend you come in four months before your big event, since the average duration of Botox is four months and cannot be reversed. This will allow you to make sure you like the results and will let your aesthetician find the best dose and area to get the desired look. This also gives you enough time for touch ups.
Then we recommend you come in two weeks before the event, for a final touch up but also to have enough time to let your skin heal, in case of bruising. Bruising is very rare but it can happen. Usually it will appear in the tear through area but for areas such as cheeks and jawline, it is highly unlikely. With every injection that causes bruising, we offer a VBeam treatment, which can be done within 3 days of the injection and will make the bruise disappear in a matter of days. Otherwise, a bruise will last one to two weeks.
